Goals give you a direction and help you spend your time constructively. Revise and adjust your goals on a regular basis. Priorities and goals change over time so, it’s important to review them monthly to assess where you are and where you’re going.
Here’s an interesting technique to try when you are attempting to clarify your current goals:
- Get a clean pad of sticky notes.
- Write each goal down – 1 per paper.
- Separate the goals into personal and business categories (I love using lots of wall space for this!)
- Ask yourself – “Is this goal important to me?”
If no – rip it off the wall and trash it.
If YES – then keep it up there. - Ask yourself: “Am I willing to take repeated action toward achieving this goal”
If no – rip it off the wall and trash it.
If YES – then keep it up there. - Now comes the fun part… with each goal left sticking… make it grittier: Take yourself on. Define it, what you actually hope to achieve. How will you measure your success against this goal? How will you know you’ve achieved it? And the most critical question… BY WHEN would you like to achieve it?
This activity is fast and fun to do, and will really help you CLARIFY your goals, not just by getting more specific, but releasing those dead, has-been goals that may have been in your way, but which have no ‘teeth’ at this time.
