Mompreneurs need to have a working office! At any time, moms in business can be interrupted by family needs, so it’s important to learn how to set up your office so it is most ready for you, when you are ready to work. This tip will help you create one little system that will help support your ability to hop in and out of work mode when you have tidbits of time.
Setting Up An Office Command Center
The first thing you need is to create your very own Command Center. This should be within arms reach and central to your work zone. Your Command Center should contain everything you need that is conducive to what you do 80% of the time. (It is even better if you can set this up so that you are able to find what you need within an arms’ reach.) Some productivity experts refer to this as your control panel (borrowing an aviation analogy).
Setting Up A Mobile Office Command Center
If you’re a road warrior and do much of your business in or from your vehicle (or even if you’re a heavy commuter) It’s also important to create a Mobile Office Command Center that supports you on the go. If your time is split between an office and mobile location, you may need to build redundancy and/or portability into your Command Center.
I once worked with a mom who was a pharmaceutical sales manager. She struggled with staying organized because while she worked from home, she was always in and out of her car. She carried loads of samples and product brochures with her, and was dispatched by a central office. When we set up redundancy in her mobile office (Yes, her car) – she felt MUCH more organized, and was able to stay on top of things more easily.
We categorized all the items in her car, labeled them and created inventory lists. But, most importantly, we created a Mobile Office Command Center so she had a set of office supplies, papers, and everything she needed to service her clients in the field. Her Mobile Office Command Center rode in the passenger seat of her car while she worked, and she could easily remove it to make room for her passengers.
