Function Wins Over Form Every Time!
The statement Function Wins Over Form has everything to do with honoring an items’ functional use before you value “how it looks” or it’s “form”.
How does this apply to productivity you ask?
Well, many people get caught in the trap of buying (acquiring or keeping) something they like for aesthetic reasons, but they never consider how useful it may be. This is even more true when it comes to organizing products. I’ve visited MANY clients who have amassed countless “organizing” products to solve their problems… The items may be “cute”, “clever”, or even “a perfect matched set”…. but if the items do not serve a function, or SOLVE a problem, they will more than likely CREATE one!
Function = how an item is used
Form = how an item looks or feels
While these two aspects are very important to creating a productive working environment and living space, I tell people to choose functionality over form every time. If it’s more convenient (functional) – to drop my keys on the counter when I get in, than it is to tuck them away in a beautiful cabinet… I’ll drop them on that counter 9 times out of 10. (Unless of course company is coming, or I’m being watched!)
Do you need to re-tune your organizing systems so that they are more functional? If you thought about your systems functionally, would you make different choices?
