If people didn’t benefit from routine, there would be none. Humans form habits around reliable and repeatable tasks.
For all the tasks that you are required to repeatedly perform, consider “scheduling” them into a routine.
Tasks such as laundry, shopping, cleaning, dishes, and home maintenance are all regularly required to efficiently run a home. Consider “scheduling” time to actually complete each of these tasks on a reasonably cyclical basis.
Use the technique that I use with my family… Our Sunday Summit – We sit around the kitchen table after dinner on Sunday evenings and review everyone’s upcoming weekly schedules. We also plan out our dinner menus for the week and figure out who is going where.
This one scheduling routine has made a HUGE difference for my family and in our shared sense of accountability to prioritizing family time and what is most important.
Also, now that the kids are older (teens) – we use ical and Google Calendar to schedule reminders and recurring appointments like sports events, boy scout meetings and weekend commitments.
