Mompreneur Time Management Tip – Prioritize What Is Most Important

December 10, 2013 by Cena Block ·

To be successful at running your own business, moms must prioritize what is most important to effectively manage their time.  Prioritization is a critical management skill for both business and personal success.

Prioritize What Is Most Important

To prioritize one thing over another means to designate or treat it as more important than other things.

Prioritization is essential to making the very best use of your own efforts and those around you. Effective prioritization is particularly important when time is limited and demands are seemingly unstoppable. To prioritize means you allocate your time where it’s most-needed and most wisely spent, freeing you and your team up from less important tasks that can be attended to later… or quietly dropped. Prioritizing tasks and projects will help you create calmness and space in your life so that you can focus your energy and attention on the things that really matter. With good prioritization (and careful management of re-prioritized tasks) you can bring order to chaos, massively reduce stress, and move towards a successful conclusion. Without it, you’ll flounder around, drowning in competing demands

For many moms to be successful in business, they must prioritize based on needs of others – namely their children. What happens when junior is sick? Often, regardless of the planning that mom has done – tasks, activities and deadlines must be adjusted to solve for the new information. Re-prioritizing takes into account what is most important to you and shifts tasks accordingly. To prioritize effectively you must know what you value. An inquiry into your core values is a worthy pursuit. Once you’ve identified and defined your core values, prioritizing becomes easier. While you may value achievement, my may value family happiness more. By identifying, ranking and then defining your core values, you will have a clearer path of action when things shift. Knowing your core values will help you prioritize the many tasks and activities you need to juggle as a busy mompreneur.

Your Sanity Strategy Assignment

Think of the top 3 values that are important to you right now. My top 3 for instance are: Family Happiness, Adventure, and Economic Security.  Now, identify your top three, and then define what would be ‘satisfaction’ with those values on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.

Here are some satisfiers for my core value of Family Happiness: “I spend quality time with my kids weekly. We enjoy healthy, nutritious food at meal time and keep dinner time pure and wholesome. I am available to my kids when they need me. My husband and I have one date night monthly just for us where we escape from the everyday and treat ourselves to some adventure. Home maintenance routines are shared and collectively managed by all of us.”

Now, identify your top three values and flesh them out for yourself. How will you measure your success and satisfaction for yourself?

Once you do so, you’ll have a very simple way to manage your time and meet these core needs for yourself and your family.
