5 Strategies For Organizing Clutter

September 29, 2015 by Cena Block · Leave a Comment

I’m excited to share a post by Patricia Cornwell. Patricia is an expert in the field of organizing and cleaning spaces. She makes her own DIY organizers and printables. This is the main reason she founded SW14 BestLondonCleaners.

Now is the best time to consider the idea of living a simplified life.

Decluttering your home is without a doubt a tedious, but also a necessary task.

The things you’ve been collecting over the years will, eventually, take up all the free space in your home. When that moment comes, you will have no other option but to start organizing and cleaning all rooms of your property. This could take days, depending on the amount of stuff you have. There is no need, however, to make things harder for you. In order to avoid the complications, you can just take care of the clutter earlier.

The truth is that all of us buy all kinds of things that we don’t really need and then we wonder where to put them. It is not necessary to wait until your closet runs out of space to realize that you have to do something about the clutter in your home. The sooner you take measures, the better.

Here are five great strategies you can use:

1. Be creative

The best way to cope with clutter is to use your imagination. Performing a major cleaning from time to time is a good way to take care of the good looks of your property, but it is possible to miss some things. In order to declutter your home for real and keep it that way, you will have to be more creative. For instance, you can take pictures of the different rooms and collect the items that don’t seem to fit in.

2. Declutter your home one item at a time

One of the hardest things is deciding which things to keep and which ones to throw out. In order to make things easier, you can just ask yourself questions like “Would I buy this now?” and “What can I use this for?”. Removing one item each day will also make the whole decluttering of your place easier. Before you know it, your home will be organized and all unnecessary things will be gone. Keep in mind, however, that this strategy may require years.

3. Organize a 20-minute challenge

This is a fun and fast way to free your property from all of the extra stuff. What you need is a timer and a couple of hours. Whether you want to declutter your home for one day or organize a challenge each day of the week for the different premises of your home, it is entirely up to you. The rule is, however, that you can’t spend more than 20 minutes in a room. Once you set the timer, you have to try to collect all unnecessary things as fast as possible.

4. Make quick decisions

Speed is the key to the prompt decluttering of your place. By being fast and organized, you will be able to cover more areas of your property and finish with the tedious task of cleaning the whole house in no time. Make sure that you don’t get distracted by memories or stories related to the specific items, otherwise you will lose precious time. All that matters is whether you need this object now.

5. Create a list

Making a list of all areas you need to declutter is another excellent strategy. You can start with the easiest ones, like the drawers in your bedroom or the cabinets in the kitchen. How you organize your time is entirely up to you. It is best, however, to take care of one area and then stop for the day. This way you’ll have enough energy to do the same thing tomorrow.

Unfortunately, there is no way you can avoid the decluttering and cleaning of your property, so we advise you to get to work as soon as possible. With the previously mentioned strategies you will finish with this unpleasant task before you know it.
