Let’s face it, Social media is here to stay…
But are you using it in the most effective way for your business?
If you’re spending extraordinary amounts of time on social media platforms yet not gaining the results you desired, maybe it’s time to rethink your social media strategy. This post can help you make the most of your time on social media.
Social media has been all the rage for several years now… Who would have thought that Facebook would know more about me than my own family???
Well, as much as I love the ease, fun and entertainment value of how social media works – I also consider it a powerful spoke in my own content marketing strategy. It can be daunting when you begin to dabble into the social cyber-sphere, but you can do this. Start with a clear strategy, and start small.

Here are the 5 most important things you’ll need in place for your social status to give you a marketing edge.
1. Serve Your Peeps!
Be sure to serve your client first before engaging in anything social. The best companies put customers first… always. Why not just do what is easy, and follow the magic formula of those who are already successful! Before you “sell” on social media, you have to ask: how can I be of service to my people. You will always be ahead of someone else on the road to success – and those behind may be watching you at all times. Serve with integrity and passion. When in doubt or in a negative mindset, do something to get in a positive frame of mind, focus on your most ideal client, and then ask: How may I be of service to you and others like you? With time, practice and patience, you’ll soon be given direction through listening and serving deeply. People who need and love you will show up, and happily share how you can help and support them… and you just need to stand in service and move onto #2 suggestion…
2. Continuously Create and Curate Content!
The game is about adding value – and sharing information freely. The competitive business model of ‘me’ vs. ‘you’ is outdated, and no longer works in a marketplace built on FREE – think of the exponential power of shareware and collaboration. Create what you need to fill the gaps in your core content, and then troll the internet to find or ‘curate’ content that may be meaningful to your tribe. The key here is about rising above the noise and crowd, holding your space, and gathering your ideal people to you. Once you have a base of core content, you can use any number of different tools to create a repository. I love using tools like Dropbox, Drive, Evernote and Asana (and I might add, I use them ALL for different reasons!) But, the beauty is that I can store massive amounts of data and content in many, many ways – to make it available to me and my team whenever we need it.
3. Automate Core Content
Get started with your core content: anything that you and your clients consider to be your ‘best stuff’. This is likely the content that you’ve developed along life’s way – the stuff that simply rolls off your tongue when you’re barely listening to yourself. It’s what comes out when you’re at an event and you happen to say something that makes someone else stop and say “wait… what did you just say?” When you find core content, jump on it, name it, create it, copyright it and start sharing it. Now, all you need to do is consult your repository of core content, and you can use any number of different tools to get your content on autopilot! Some of my favorites recently of course are Hootsuite, Bundlepost, Social Oomph and Tweet Jukebox. All of these platforms offer different ways to bulk upload your content in batches, and then serve it up so you can elbow yourself into the cyber chats and conversations already taking place! Go where your tribe is already gathered and see who joins you. It’s always a fun adventure…
4. Leverage What You Have
While writing this post, I looked up the definition of leverage, and WOW, does this word have multiple meanings! Here’s the one I believe is most relevant – The ability to influence a system, or an environment, in a way that multiplies the outcome of one’s efforts without a corresponding increase… and this is what begins to happen to those who are consistent, methodical and patient with their outcomes.
5. Engage with your audience… yes, live!
Here’s the biggest tip in this post….
Social media is – SOCIAL…!
Yep, that means you have to be social yourself. (Hang on there, wait, what did she say?) YES – in a world of self-aggrandizement, selfies, town criers, and soap box rants, remember that you will be the voice of your brand and business. So – before you engage – get centered in the right mindset, then show up, share your thoughts, be transparent, be seen, be authentic, and be yourself! Don’t overwhelm yourself. Just use the platforms your ideal clients use (start with those only). Every platform is different… so my best advice is to test the waters first before you jump right in and nail your big cannon ball! I’ve seen many good people jump in too soon before the ‘audience’ has gathered and have lack-luster results. So, take it slow… the ripple effect does work (it’s basic physics after all). But here’s a note of caution for the tender-footted… Do not diversify too soon. Get a feel for a platform by following other influencers, see what they do – then do what they do and soon enough, you’ll be engaging naturally and on your way to success!
