All Work and No Play Makes Jane a Dull Girl
All work and no play makes Jane a dull girl. Remember that proverb…I pride myself on how much I can get done in a day…In fact, I pride myself on how much I can get done in 15 minutes. And, somewhere in all of this doing and completing tasks – I forgot what fun is…
I know I’m depleted in my life when I hear myself saying to love ones, “I need fun.” A depleted coach, mentor, leader and mother isn’t serving anyone.
Fun in our lives results in better health, productivity, and better learning. Wow, who knew fun was so important?
I once was asked by a mentor, “So, what do you do for fun?” I was embarrassed to say, “I don’t know.” And, over the years, I have asked this questions of clients, and they, too, have been tongue tied and said, “I don’t know.”
[Tweet “So what do you do for fun? 3 steps to create the fun you need. #selfcare”]
Here are three steps I have done myself and suggest to clients:
1. Create a Fun Strategy
I know creating a strategy seems counter-intuitive to fun. Trust me, it helps. It is one of the action steps I did to invite more fun into my life and it is one of the action steps I suggest to clients. Why do you need a strategy? For most of us, if we have a moment in our schedule, we will fill it with those responsible tasks.
Come up with a list of things that give you joy, fun and pleasure. It is important to have fun stuff to do for 15 minutes to an entire day.
2. Connect to Your Joy Spot
Seeing the fun in everyday moments of your life takes (I believe) a great knowing that you are safe in every situation. The only way I know to create this profound sense of safety is by connection to my higher power and feeling that unlimited joy of connection. We so often get all hung up about connecting…So I suggest this simple technique.
Take a deep breath and connect to your heart. Then say this statement to yourself or aloud:
“Divine Intelligence, create a consciousness connection to my higher power and fill my body with the joy and pleasure of that connection. And, I’m willing and able to bring this ease, joy and fun into my everyday moments.”
The more that you connect and experience the fun and joy of connection, the more you will bring that into every situation of your life.
3. Collaborate with Your Inner Kid
I was one of those kids that would play for hours in my room – alone! What kind of kid were you? What is your inner kid craving when it comes to fun? I suggest that you set aside time each day to have a playdate of fun with you and your inner kid.
When I was in my 30s (I’m 46 now), for Christmas, I asked for crayons and a coloring book (this was way before the craze of coloring for stress relief). Why? I missed it and I knew that would give me great joy. So what does your inner kid want to do? Take out that Easy Bake Oven? Learn to dance? Take a pottery class? It’s time that you give yourself permission to experience the fun and freedom of being a kid.
Like with all things, once you make a decision and commit to having more fun in your life, you will create the time and space for it. And then, you get to watch how having a little bit more fun transforms your whole world.
