Many people have struggled to understand their personal strategy of expression. Claims of “I’m Just different”, “I’m a Geek” or “I don’t fit in…” are often heard by parents of teens. This article addresses ways to recognize a gap and address a creative way to express themselves authentically and powerfully!
I don’t think anyone plans to lose their voice. It kind of just happens. I’m not talking your speaking voice. I’m talking about your personal strategy of expression of self.
Sometimes we realize that we haven’t really been using our voice at all. I realized this to be true. My community, loved ones, friends and clients would have been shocked that I believed I haven’t been applying my voice – and yet it was true.
Noticing the Lack of Expression
When we want to transform anything, the first step is noticing the lack.
I first began to notice this when I started taking singing lessons. I could feel myself searching to truly express myself, something big wanted to be unleashed and I didn’t know the path to allow it to run free. I wanted to sing from the deepest part of my Soul. I spent all the time in my head searching to sound a certain way, uncomfortable when a strange sound came out. And, profoundly wanting to express myself when I sang. That deep desire came from my Soul, so it had to be worthy. The only obstacle was all those beliefs and patterns that were telling me the opposite.
This insight that I was holding myself back hit me like a ton of bricks. I wasn’t only holding myself back in singing, but I was also holding myself from the Divine. Holding back from allowing the Divine to support me and to being a channel of Divine Voice.
These facts created a deep sadness and I knew it created suffering in my life and in my business. Recently, watching a preview for Orange is the New Black, I heard this line… “The difference between pain and suffering is suffering is a choice.”
Taking Action on True Expression of Soul
So it was time to be in action with the expression of my Soul. What I did and what does that look like? It is personal – that’s not some copout or spiritual mumbo jumbo. It truly is personal. It is a personal strategy with my Soul.
The jumping off point to create this deep collaboration with my Soul was this: If I was truly expressing every part of my Soul, what would I be and do in this moment?
That question allowed me to be in expression moment by moment. Create in the now – express in the now. And then to celebrate each expression. Celebrate every moment. I know the former statements can make eyes roll (it makes my eyes roll), and when you participate in your personal strategy of expression, it creates freedom.
I also made a list of those activities that I gave up because of other obligations or fear. Each week, I decided to participate, once again, in those activities that bring me joy.
The understanding alone about holding back and the little steps I began taking formed a surge of inspiration and that propelled me into further expression.

Creating Your Personal Strategy for True Expression
1. So how do we go about releasing our voice of Soul’s true expression? You get to create your personal formula to do that.
I suggest starting with a foundational question like:
- If I was truly expressing every part of my Soul, what would I be and do in this moment?
- If I knew I was unlimited, what would I create today?
- If I knew and accepted that I’m a supported, what would I express today?
2. You also want to understand an activity or experience when you felt/feel that true expression of your voice and tap into that in those areas where you need to express yourself more fully. My inspiration was the feeling of freedom singing and dancing around in my living room. During those times, I’m in the full expression of my Soul and Divine Voice.
3. Create a list of those activities that bring you joy and celebrate the uniqueness of you! If you want to take guitar lessons, do so. If you want to bake bread, do so. If you want to learn to fly, do so.
4. Challenge yourself. Soul is never boring and it is always unfolding. Be open to those opportunities that are going to give that voice and expression of yours a platform.
With every act of transformation, practice and participation is the key. Remember, our expression and connection are personal.
