Anyone working in an office setting would be thrilled with the convenience of remote file access. For those who aren’t already aware, this service allows users to access files from any time, anywhere, from any device. Sounds fantastic, right?

Although remote file access most definitely has its benefits, it isn’t without its challenges and disadvantages, such as the following:

1. You Might Be More Vulnerable to Hackers.

Office employers are always educating their employees on steering clear of doing anything that might welcome hackers. Sadly, some remote file access servers are not exactly hack-proof. Considering files can be accessed from any device, this alone puts your precious files of being at risk of landing into someone else’s hands.

2. Remote File Access May Contribute to Productivity Problems.

Sometimes accessing and downloading larger files can be a problem with remote file access servers. In turn, this can make employees frustrated, lose track of what they were going to do next, and generally, have to deal with wasted time.

3. It May Not Work on All Devices.

While it’s convenient that remote file access is compatible with so many different devices, there are still many devices out there that your server may not work with, causing a pretty big inconvenience if you don’t have another compatible device on hand at the time.

4. Costs Can Add Up Quickly.

Some servers will provide you with free storage. However, the more space you require, the more you’ll need to spend, and as everyone knows, space can be filled relatively fast, especially in a work setting.

5. Many Require the Remote Desktop to Stay on to Share Files.

Clearly, this requirement can be an inconvenience for many office employees, especially when access to the desktop is not available at the time.

6. Some Remote File Access Services Require Initial Setup.

It can be a bit of a struggle and annoyance for office workers to have to deal with the setup of a remote file access server, especially when it’s their very first time setting one up.

7. Internet Access May Be Required.

When you want to access files anywhere at any time, it’s generally nice to be able to do so whether or not you have access to the Internet. However, in many cases, Internet access is, in fact, required.

8. While Relatively Easy to Use, it’s Another Thing Employees May Struggle With.

In some cases, remote file access might be a little difficult for employees to use at first as it’s something many have yet to work with. Not to mention, it’s yet another thing that office workers may have technical trouble with.

Although, proper training on remote file access as well as selecting a server that claims they provide remote file access made easy will help eliminate some or all of these struggles among workers.

Conclusion

Don’t get us wrong; remote file access can be a great asset in the office. However, there are various cons that may make its use challenging or risky. However, if you opt for an adequate, secure remote file access server, you can avoid many of the disadvantages that are sometimes tied to this service.
