How Improving Self-Awareness Helps ADHD Adults

July 8, 2025 by Cena Block Leave a Comment

Introduction

Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) often grapple with executive function deficits and emotional dysregulation, impacting their daily lives and relationships. The Crucial Conversations framework (outlined in the book Crucial Conversations by Grenny) offers valuable tools to address these challenges. In this post, we focus on the principle of “Start with Heart,” emphasizing the importance of self-awareness in navigating difficult conversations and emotions. PubMed+1PMC+1

Executive Function Deficits: Executive functions are cognitive processes that enable individuals to plan, focus attention, remember instructions, and juggle multiple tasks. In adults with ADHD, these functions are often impaired, leading to difficulties in organizing tasks, managing time, and regulating emotions. A systematic review highlighted that individuals with ADHD exhibit significant deficits in executive functions, affecting their daily functioning and quality of life .

Emotional Dysregulation: Emotional dysregulation refers to difficulties in managing emotional responses, leading to disproportionate reactions to situations. Studies have shown that between 34% to 70% of adults with ADHD experience significant emotional dysregulation, which can exacerbate other ADHD symptoms and impair social functioning Verywell MindPMC

Applying The “Start with Heart” Principle

The “Start with Heart” principle encourages individuals to focus on what they truly want for themselves and others in a conversation. For adults with ADHD, this involves:

  1. Self-Reflection: Before engaging in a conversation, take a moment to identify your true intentions and desired outcomes. This helps in aligning your actions with your goals, reducing impulsivity. Self-awareness is key to starting with heart.
  2. Recognizing Emotional Triggers: Understanding what triggers emotional responses can aid in managing reactions. For instance, if feedback often feels like criticism, recognizing this can help in responding more constructively. Practicing coping strategies with interpersonal relationships is key to understanding and inhibiting your emotional triggers effectively.
  3. Maintaining Focus: By keeping the desired outcome in mind, it’s easier to navigate conversations without getting sidetracked by emotional reactions or distractions.

Supporting Research

  • A study found that adults with ADHD who practiced self-reflection techniques showed improved emotional regulation and reduced impulsivity. ScienceDirect
  • Mindfulness-based interventions, which align with the “Start with Heart” principle, have been effective in enhancing self-awareness and emotional control in individuals with ADHD.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) approaches that incorporate goal-setting and self-monitoring have demonstrated improvements in executive functioning among adults with ADHD.

Practical Steps

  • Journaling: Journaling does not have to be hard. The best way to begin journaling when you have ADHD is to just start. Pick a notebook and favorite pen, and write down your thoughts and feelings. Over time, you’ll begin to identify patterns and triggers.
  • Mindfulness Practices: Engage in mindfulness exercises to enhance present-moment awareness and reduce reactive behaviors.
  • Set Clear Intentions: Intentions are thoughts that typically exist before you take any action. Our goal through coaching is aligning intention with your attention, before you take action. So, to practice starting with heart in conversations, clearly define what you hope to achieve, helping to steer the discussion constructively.

Conclusion

By “Starting with Heart,” adults with ADHD can cultivate greater self-awareness, leading to improved emotional regulation and more effective communication. This foundational step sets the stage for navigating crucial conversations with clarity and purpose.

About Cena Block

Welcome readers! If this is your first time visiting my blog, thank you for stopping by!

I'm Cena and I work with high performers, professionals, and entrepreneurs with ADHD. If you're an entrepreneur or high- performing professional who is distracted, overwhelmed, and feeling lost in the shuffle, let's talk.

As a Certified Productivity Coach (Re-certified CPC-2026, 2023, Initial CPC-2020) and Certified Organizer Coach (COC-2017) and Productivity Consultant, I can help.
I work with clients in 3 different ways: I coach privately, I work as a consultant with your leadership team or employee staff members, and assist with customized training in areas of time, teaming, and productivity.

Coaching helps professionals with ADHD slow down, focus and get curious. Weekly sessions help you recognize when your inner critic is in your way, and provide accountability for incremental steps forward.

ADHD brains work differently than neurotypical brains. While freedom and flexibility energize you, routines, tracking, and systems help you calm down, cut the chaos, and provide the grounding your brain needs to be at its best. Working with a Certified ADHD Coach is essential. I can help you understand how your ADHD shows up. Together we grow your awareness, improve your confidence and assist you to reach results while finding quality time for family, your passions and yourself!
