Help Kids Read Using These 8 Strategies

January 8, 2020 by Cena Block Leave a Comment

Inspire Your Child’s Thirst for Knowledge by Encouraging Them to Read

There is no doubt that reading is one of the essential skills kids should learn to be successful. If your child has excellent reading skills, it will not only benefit him/her academically, but it will help him/her in achieving lifelong success. Helping kids read improves skills, develops vocabulary, boosts concentration, and promotes stronger logical thinking.

If you want your child to be a stellar student, do not limit their reading and learning skills to the walls of his/her classroom or to primetime TV. As per a University of California paper, children’s books open up kids to 50% more words than primetime TV. Try to make reading is an enjoyable part of his/her everyday life. It will develop positive attitudes toward reading.

This blog focuses on some tips for parents about how they can make reading a fun part of their children’s daily life. Let us check out how these tips will help improve the reading skills of your child.

1. Talk a lot and explore words to encourage kids to read more

Maybe you will feel a bit dopey talking to a baby or a young child. However, studies have shown that exposing your child to a variety of words helps them in his/her literacy skill development.

So, keep in mind that reading is one kind of language activity. If your child would hear it better, then it will eventually speak it. So, try to talk to your kids a lot. It will build strong literacy skills in them, and they will enjoy reading.

2. Fill their world with reading

If your child grows up with books all around them, they will learn to think about books as friends. They easily ally in their pursuit of adventure and learning. You can even establish a family reading time when everyone reads his/her own books.

You should demonstrate to them how vital reading is. For that, you can fill your home with different printed materials such as novels, newspapers, posters, and many more. Try to give your child easy access to books and other reading material at home. It will make them realize that reading does not happen only at school, but it can happen anywhere.

3. Role model reading for your children

You should set an example for your child. For that, you can act as a role model and read in front of your child. When your child watches you read magazines, newspapers, and books, it will show them that reading is important.

Inspire your child to join you with his/her books while you are reading. So, let your child see that you are reading. Let them figure out how much you enjoy reading books and magazines.

4. Make an event out of visiting your local library

Get your child a library card. Demonstrate to them how a library can be a place of enjoyment. Make them understand that a library can open up entirely new worlds of learning that will last a lifetime.

Make sure to put the library in your schedule so your child will be automatically encouraged to visit it frequently together.

5. To help your kid read, explore different book genres

Always try to understand your child’s interest. Try to search for a book that interests your child. Explore different genres, such as mystery, how-to-books, science fiction, biographies, comic books, poetry, and more.

There are some children’s magazines that can be a great out-of-the-box way to inspire your child to read. The more interested your kid is in a particular subject, the more he/she will be motivated to read and learn.

6. Encourage your kid to find books they like

Of course, showing your child books is a great way to build his/her interest level. However, if a child finds new books on their own, then he/she can benefit from an increased sense of independence. If you want to make your child a life-long reader, then let them have his/her own choices in reading material.

If your kid chooses, what he/she wants to read, he/she will remain more engaged. This statement holds for all types of books including a novel, a comic book, or a magazine. This way, kids will be more likely to retain information.

7. Be interactive to show interest in your kid’s ability to read

If you give feedback or show interest in your child’s reading, it can have a profound effect on them. So, engage with them while they are reading. Let them retell a story or express their views on informational text.

Ask them questions about the story or explain to them about an informational text. Never forget to give them genuine praise for their effort.

8. Support their interests with books and research

If you feel like your kid is facing difficulty while reading and getting frustrated, then take a step back and see where he/she is struggling. Talk with his/her teacher and try to resolve the issue as soon as possible.

In conclusion

To conclude, it’s important to make reading fun for your kids. Plan so you can avoid frustration, and help them gain new skills from good, consistent reading habits. The tips above will help hook your child’s reading habits, help improve the reading skills of your child and help kids read more often. Use these ways to give your child the reading boost he/she needs.

Coaching helps professionals with ADHD slow down, focus and get curious. Weekly sessions help you recognize when your inner critic is in your way, and provide accountability for incremental steps forward.

ADHD brains work differently than neurotypical brains. While freedom and flexibility energize you, routines, tracking, and systems help you calm down, cut the chaos, and provide the grounding your brain needs to be at its best. Working with a Certified ADHD Coach is essential. I can help you understand how your ADHD shows up.
