9 Simple and Effective Ways to Reduce Office Stress

9 Simple and Effective Ways to Reduce Office Stress

As hard as it is to get good employees today, it is important to help them reduce office stress. Office stress negatively impacts your staff’s ability to be happy and productive. Office stress can cause reduced productivity and unhappy workers more often quit to look for less-stressful jobs elsewhere. Wise employers work hard to reduce office stress and provide a workplace where each person contributes and thrives.

Workplace stress can come from workloads, lack of security in the job, personnel problems, poor employee environment fit, long hours, overcrowding, and other factors. But, there are ways to improve the workplace and reduce office stress.

9 Ways to Reduce Office Stress

  1. Workplace Wellness

One way to build employee health is to encourage exercise, yoga, healthy snacks, and other wellness programs. Consider taking employees off-site on occasion for stress relief. This could be a company picnic, a trip to a vineyard or a pub, a baseball game, or a community event.

Office Yoga and meditation classes can lead to better employee attitudes and increased productivity. Yoga and meditation classes are easy to find locally or online and feature professional instructors. These classes require little equipment and a small dedicated space but can improve employee wellness and job satisfaction.

  2. Update The Office Environment

In order to refresh your surroundings, update the office space to be more inviting. Add an upbeat, relaxing color scheme that employees help choose. Improve the amenities such as coffee and lunchroom. Add some diversions to the office space for stress relief. These can include board games, a dartboard, a ping pong table, video games, and more. Offer an office organizing day to help employees reduce physical and digital clutter. What about making the office dog-friendly? When employees have ways of reducing stress in the office, they will be able to work better and be more productive.

  3. Rethink Office Hours

Rethink employee hours and allow flexibility with a mix of office and remote working times. Allow employees to define performance by the timeliness and quality of their work.

  4. Build Trust

Encourage employees to get to know and trust each other. Or offer ways to encourage office social activity to help people get to know one another and work better together.

  5. Reduce Office Stress By Providing Quiet Space

In order for everyone to feel more comfortable, create quiet spaces to allow employees to take a break and destress. This can be a room at the end of a hall or a bench outside.

  6. Staff Support Through Counseling

A company can gain real benefits by providing stress counseling for its employees in the office or off-site. Encourage your employees to take advantage of mental health and wellness services provided by your medical coverage.

  7. Build Individual Strengths

Another way to reduce office stress is to take a strengths-based approach to delegate tasks. If you have a detail-oriented employee, allow her to shine. Giving work that matches employees’ strengths can destress.

  8. Recognition and Acknowledgement Reduces Office Stress

Another way to reduce office stress is to really acknowledge a job well done. Today, a genuine ‘Thank You’ goes a long way to reduce office stress. Everyone works harder and more attentively when they feel valued, seen, and acknowledged, so it’s important to recognize efforts on a regular basis. Knowing ones’ effort is appreciated balances office stress.

  9. Revisit Paid Time Off and Family Leave

In addition to offering time away from work with responsible screen time expectations, consider how your company talks about and manages expectations around time off. Look into state family leave policies and make paid and unpaid leave rules more closely meet the needs of the employees. Check out the Family Medical Leave Act. Show a little empathy and understanding to employees with family emergencies, illnesses, or child-care problems. An employee with a toothache needs time off to go to a dentist and get the problem treated or they will not be able to do their best work. A mother whose babysitter did not show up needs time off to care for her child or find an alternate childcare provider without fearing the loss of her job.

In conclusion, when you talk to employees to discover issues and problems you’ll be able to make small changes to reduce office stress. Whether it’s office space, work schedules, or mismatched work tasks, employees are your best resources. Ask your staff to list things to improve to reduce office stress and build productivity and satisfaction. Lead by example by taking yearly vacations, working regular hours, and getting exercise. You will be well on your way to reducing office stress and enabling a productive work environment.

About Cena Block

Welcome readers! If this is your first time visiting my blog, thank you for stopping by!

I'm Cena and I work with high performers, professionals, and entrepreneurs with ADHD. If you're an entrepreneur or high- performing professional who is distracted, overwhelmed, and feeling lost in the shuffle, let's talk.

As a Certified Productivity Coach (Re-certified CPC-2026, 2023, Initial CPC-2020) and Certified Organizer Coach (COC-2017) and Productivity Consultant, I can help.
I work with clients in 3 different ways: I coach privately, I work as a consultant with your leadership team or employee staff members, and assist with customized training in areas of time, teaming, and productivity.

Coaching helps professionals with ADHD slow down, focus and get curious. Weekly sessions help you recognize when your inner critic is in your way, and provide accountability for incremental steps forward.

ADHD brains work differently than neurotypical brains. While freedom and flexibility energize you, routines, tracking, and systems help you calm down, cut the chaos, and provide the grounding your brain needs to be at its best. Working with a Certified ADHD Coach is essential. I can help you understand how your ADHD shows up. Together we grow your awareness, improve your confidence and assist you to reach results while finding quality time for family, your passions and yourself!
