When you manage a team, it can be frustrating to manage an employee with ADHD. You might feel like managing an ADHD employee is a full-time job in and of itself.

According to the Attention Deficient Disorder Association, employees with ADHD are 30% more likely to experience chronic employment issues. If you’re managing an employee who lives with ADHD, there are plenty of strategies that can make it easier for both of you! Use this 7 Best Practices to Manage ADHD Employees Infographic as a guide to keep everyone on track.

Best Practices for Managing Employees with Adult ADHD

1. Focus on the End Result Rather than the Journey

People with ADHD have their way of doing things which may be unconventional. As long as it meets requirements, allow your ADHD employee to adapt a documented procedure if it helps them reach results.

2. Plan, Externalize Milestones, Communicate and Remind

For an employee with ADHD, long-term goals are often stressful and confusing. Break down the steps to get there, be clear and consistent on the outcomes, and encourage open communication along the way. This will increase motivation and keep everyone on track.

3. Make Maintenance Matter And Hold Your Deadlines

While ADHD employees enjoy interesting work, they’re known to have a low tolerance for mundane, everyday maintenance tasks. Create a consistent systemic support system to easily update progress, and meet deadlines.

4. Provide Reasonable Accommodations

Be clear about deadlines and ask how you can help them get things in on time. Allow them to self-manage their energy by encouraging periodic short breaks, flexing work hours to take advantage of a quieter environment, or adjusting to help them perform consistently.

5. Work with Their Strengths (And Avoid Their Weaknesses)

To boost your employee’s performance let them focus on their strengths. Give them ample ability to showcase their greatness. Set them up for success and either avoid weaknesses or offer proper support in those areas.

6. Great Managers Make Relationships The Priority

Many managers focus only on the work and miss the profound importance of your employees’ feelings about you. Feelings and relationships matter to ADHD employees. Emotional dysregulation and rejection sensitivity make time spent investing in your relationship really pay off.

7. Help Them Learn Their Preferences for Time and Space

Some ADHD employees struggle with organizing and time management in the workplace. But everyone, neurotypical and neurodivergent, has their preferences. Learn these preferences and work with them rather than against them.

To effectively manage ADHD adults, help them know themselves. I’ve created the Time & Space Style Inventory (TSSI™) to help people embrace their natural time management and organizing styles.

Create a Successful Work Environment

Supportive managers create exceptional ADHD employees! These tips when properly implemented provide a great framework to keep everyone accountable, organized, and on track.

About Cena Block

Welcome readers! If this is your first time visiting my blog, thank you for stopping by!

I'm Cena and I work with high performers, professionals, and entrepreneurs with ADHD. If you're an entrepreneur or high- performing professional who is distracted, overwhelmed, and feeling lost in the shuffle, let's talk.

As a Certified Productivity Coach (Re-certified CPC-2026, 2023, Initial CPC-2020) and Certified Organizer Coach (COC-2017) and Productivity Consultant, I can help.
I work with clients in 3 different ways: I coach privately, I work as a consultant with your leadership team or employee staff members, and assist with customized training in areas of time, teaming, and productivity.

Coaching helps professionals with ADHD slow down, focus and get curious. Weekly sessions help you recognize when your inner critic is in your way, and provide accountability for incremental steps forward.

ADHD brains work differently than neurotypical brains. While freedom and flexibility energize you, routines, tracking, and systems help you calm down, cut the chaos, and provide the grounding your brain needs to be at its best. Working with a Certified ADHD Coach is essential. I can help you understand how your ADHD shows up. Together we grow your awareness, improve your confidence and assist you to reach results while finding quality time for family, your passions and yourself!
